It was just weeks ago that Oscar de la Renta was in the news for designing the stunning lace wedding dress of George Clooney’s wife, Amal Clooney. A beautiful bride, in a beautiful dress, Oscar himself appeared alongside Amal in a spread for Vogue.

Less than a month later, the sad news arrives from the US that the iconic fashion designer has died, aged 82. The cause of De la Renta’s death is unknown, although he was diagnosed with cancer in 2006.

After an impressive apprenticeship with Cristobal Balenciaga in Spain, De la Renta went on to launch his own label after the then first lady, Jackie Kennedy, wore his designs during the 1960s.

Since this period, a host of first ladies – including Hillary Clinton – have donned his dresses, as well as his glamorous gowns floating down the red carpet on the likes of Penelope Cruz, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lawrence.
Sex and the City fans will recall iconic scenes of the series and film, in which Carrie Bradshaw wears De la Renta designs.

De la Renta is survived by his wife Annette and adopted son Moises, while former Nina Ricci designer Peter Copping has recently been appointed as creative director of the Oscar de la Renta label.
